What to Do if You Smell Gas

Natural gas smells like sulfur or rotten eggs. If you suspect a gas leak in your home, tell an adult. If no adult is home, leave and take everyone with you. Do not use a light switch, candle, flashlight, TV, radio, garage door opener, or even a phone—a spark could ignite the gas. Go to a safe location to call 911 and your local natural gas utility.

Discuss when and why it would be hazardous to unplug an appliance or use a light, candle, flashlight, radio, or phone. _______________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ Gas Pipeline Leaks Leaks from gas pipelines, although rare, can be a fire hazard. These leaks may have a sulfur-like odor (but not always). So don’t rely on your nose alone. SMELL , LISTEN , and LOOK for any of these warning signs: • A smell of sulfur or rotten eggs

• A hissing, whistling, or roaring sound • Dirt spraying or blowing into the air • Continuous bubbling in water • Grass or plants that are dead or dying for no apparent reason

If you suspect a gas pipeline leak, do not use fire or electricity. Even the tiniest spark from a phone, flashlight, electrical appliance, or match could ignite the gas. Go far away from the area immediately, warn others, and do NOT go back until safety officials say it is safe. Ask a trusted adult to report the leak to 911 and the local natural gas utility.
